Culture and tradition are everywhere in Molveno, in Trentino, easy to track in some historical buildings, like the Little Cemetery Church of Saint Vigilio, dating back to the 13th century.
Molveno is the ideal holiday destination if you wish to combine cultural tourism with relax and sports activity. The Little Church of Saint Vigilio is located in the cemetery of Molveno, it dates back to the 13th century and it is dedicated to Saint Vigilio, one of Trento’s bishops, who died in 400 b.C.
It is listed in the items of the cultural heritage protected by the Autonomous Province of Trento, due to its particular artistic value. The conservative renovation works of the walls and frescoes took place in the period between 1991 and 1995.
The facade, protected by a small roof in shingles of wood, is particularly interesting for the series of frescoes decorating the upper part. The church has a beautiful door with a frescoed lunette, depicting scenes of the “Redeemer, the Madonna and Saint Johannes”. Inside you find the simultaneous presence of a primitive church in Romanic style of the 13th century, and a later gothic church, dating back to 1536.
The Romanic church is clearly visible in the structure in grey stone; the apse is richly frescoed, the perimeter wall are perfectly preserved and the fresco depicting “The Last Supper” welcomes the visitor with its majesty on the northern wall, on the left. The gothic enlargement dates back to 1536. The removal of the original plasters revealed a “Fragment of Crucifixion” and part of the “Decoration” which used to decorate the vault in the past. The altar is decorated with geometrical frescoes. The sacristy was added in 1857.
A detailed brochure on the renovation of the church is available in the offices of the Municipality of Molveno and at the local Tourist Board.
You can visit the internal parts only during the summer, between mid-June and mid-September, or upon request during the remaining months.
